Who is this course for?
This course is for students interested in learning Auslan as a second or additional language. Successful learning (C Grade or above) at Year 8 is preferred. Enrolment with no prior learning is to be negotiated with an OAC Languages Leader.
What will I learn?
- Learn to effectively communicate personal information, perspectives and ideas clearly in Auslan.
- Explore the history and culture of Deaf communities, understanding the diversity of signed languages.
- Express ideas and perspectives in Auslan related to their own lives and those of Auslan users.
- Develop skills in analysing the features and structure of Auslan, including fingerspelling, handshape orientation and movement, spatial location, and sign and gesture production.
- Reflect on how language and culture shape meaning and identity, and recognise the diversity of Auslan users, including deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing individuals such as Children of Deaf Adults (CODAs) and interpreters.
- Explore and analyse the linguistic, historical, and cultural trends and developments within both national and international Deaf communities, gaining insights into the evolution and diversity of signed languages.
